Hitoshi Fugo was born in 1947. After graduating from the
Photography Department in the College of Art at Nihon
University, Fugo studied under photographer Eikoh Hosoe.
Fugo began working as an independent photographer in
1973. In 2010 he was awarded the presitigious Ina Nobuo
Award, annually awarded by the Nikon Salon. Fugo has
exhibited in numerous solo and group shows in Japan and
In his mostly conceptual work Fugo negotiates existing
orders and relationships between his subjects and locations
both physically and psychologically.
His best known series are ‘Dark Changes’ from 1982,
‘Floating Around’ from the same year, ‘Flying Frying Pan’
from 1984 and ‘On the Circle’ from 2012.
