biography

Yoshio Yamamoto (b. 1927) is a Kyoto based commercial and art photographer who apprenticed under his father, the proprietor of a Kyoto photo studio in the 1940s. In 1949, Yamamoto went off on his own to operate the portrait studio of Kintetsu Department Store in Kyoto. This tenure lasted some ten years until 1960 when he inherited his father's photo studio called the Yamamoto Shashin Ten. He has continued his commercial career ever since and has produced some outstanding works throughout his life. He is also a senior ranking member of the Kyoto Photographers Association (Kyoto-fu Shashin-shi Kai) and has served as both the association's Director and Vice president. He has also won numerous awards including:
- 1955: Nominated for the Governor of Nara Prefecture Prize
- 1961: Gold Cup: International Alpine Photo Biennale, Trento, Italy
- 1972: Japanese Prime Minister Prize, 18th National Photo Contest
- 1976: Japanese Prime Minister Prize, 22nd National Photo Contest
- 1990: Lifelong Achieve Award, Japanese government citation
